Instead of blanket statements saying “Happy Women’s Month,” Council President Kenyatta Johnson put his pen to action again by honoring the women of the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office. Considering it is a law enforcement office, it has a strong presence of women in leadership—especially at the head, with Sheriff Rochelle Bilal.
The resolution, introduced by Johnson and read into the record by Councilwoman Cindy Bass, celebrates the leadership, service, and contributions of the women who serve across all ranks within the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office.
During the presentation, members of the Philadelphia City Council acknowledged the vital role women play in maintaining public safety, supporting court operations, and ensuring the effective execution of the Office’s responsibilities. The resolution also highlighted the resilience and dedication demonstrated by these women, particularly amid staffing shortages and increased operational demands.
Sheriff Bilal accepted the honor on behalf of the Office, recognizing the commitment and professionalism of the women who serve daily.
“This moment is about creating HerStory,” said Bilal. “Our sworn and unsworn professionals show up every day with strength, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to public service. Despite challenges, they continue to protect our courts, serve our communities, and uphold the highest standards of this Office.”
The resolution marks a historic milestone, as the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office is being recognized by City Council for the first time during Women’s History Month.
City Council’s recognition underscores the Office’s ongoing commitment to excellence, integrity, and service to the residents of Philadelphia.
