Gwynedd Mercy University has officially named GMercyU Hall of Famer and distinguished alumnus Darnell “Speedy” Artis ’16 as the new Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball team.
A dynamic leader on and off the court, Artis was a standout on the 2015-2016 CSAC championship team and remains one of the most beloved figures in Griffin athletics. After college, he captivated international audiences with the legendary Harlem Globetrotters, showcasing elite talent and unshakable charisma in arenas across the globe.
“Darnell has always been more than just a great player,” said GMercyU Athletic Director Keith Mondillo. “He is an inspiring leader, a role model in his community, and a proud GMercyU alum. We are thrilled to welcome him back in this new capacity and are confident he will bring energy, talent, and heart to our program.”
Artis, a graduate of La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, PA, has also become a rising community leader in Philadelphia. In 2018, he co-founded the UnderDawgs Summer Basketball League at East Germantown’s Lonnie Young Recreation Center. Since then, the league has provided a platform for local youth and highlighted positive community narratives, with appearances from hip hop artist Tierra Whack, boxing champion Boots Ennis, and Councilmember Isaiah Thomas. The program was also featured on NBC’s Emmy-nominated Harlem Globetrotters: Play It Forward.
“GMercyU took a chance on me as an 18-year-old when not many noticed me,” said Artis. “It has been a place that built me up in every way possible, both on and off the court. When I got the call that Coach Baron was moving on, it felt like a call from God. It was time to come back home and pour into a place that poured so much into me. I love being a Griffin. I’m a Griffin for life. I would say I can’t wait to start this chapter of our journey together, but the work has already started—and I’m looking forward to the challenge. One word: Culture.”
As a former Head Track Coach at Gwynedd Mercy, I understand the incredible opportunity that Speedy now has—both to lead a collegiate program and to mentor young student-athletes in a values-based environment. This is more than just a coaching position; it’s a chance to shape lives and legacy.
Artis’ return marks a new era for GMercyU Men’s Basketball—one grounded in service, community, and the Griffin pride that never fades.
